"Lost"

Primetime Lost Images Bios Bio OquinnI just finished watching last nights episode of Lost. What an incredible show. This episode on John Locke, in particular the ending montage, was heart-wrenching so as to bring tears to my eyes and somehow still managed to be creepy enough to send chill down my spine (when the "light" comes on in the hatch - brilliant). Those of you who are lost with me know what I'm talking about. I won't even start talking about how great the "Hurley" episode was.

Can this show get any deeper? It's kind of cool to keep track of everyone's stories, but man... Thick.

Here's my theory of the whole thing (and this is from my own thoughts on Lost, so please don't think I found a spoiler somewhere)... The Oceanic flight did go down, but all of the survivors were found. One survivor, in particular, though, is in a coma... The story of Lost is this person's struggle to regain consciousness (being "lost" and no one is looking for him/her, all of the weird stuff that happens, etc.).

Seriously, though, if that turns out to be the twist, I don't know if I'll count it as cheesey or cool.

at the first of the show, I was a little unsure whether Locke could be trusted or had ulterior motives...but they've really laid a lot of interesting layers to his character...

And yes, the closing scene was very powerful and then a major "whoa" moment when the light went on inside it...

As for the coma/dream theory, I've heard that mentioned before as well, but I think I remember reading somewhere that J.J. Abrams has said that the events are actually happening (ruling out a dream possibility).

All I know this is quite possibly the most brilliant (and addictive) show I've watched!

It's been interesting to see the ways the characters stories have intersected though...Sawyer meeting Jack's dad...Hurley's financial guy mentioning he was investing in a "box company", which is who Locke said he worked for...

Plus, the idea of everyone having a "fresh start/clean slate" on the island has a lot theological applications as well...

geez....this show is so compelling and thought-provoking and last night i was so freaked out i almost peed my pants. i had to get scott to watch another show with me so i could go to bed without thinking i was going to have a dream like Locke's. i don't have theories about what is or is not going to happen, i just sit back and enjoy (sometimes with my head under the blanket peeking out just so i can see a little.).

I just can't get enough how the writers and producers of this show navigate a wide range of emotional peaks and valleys...for example the episode where Hurley sets up the golf course to relieve pressure and create fun for those people in crisis - it actually worked for me, too - I was having fun watching them play this goofy game of golf.

As for coincidences: Locke showing that boy the mouse trap game - hint, hint, hint...anyone else wonder if that kid might actually be Boone as a kid (same piercing blue eyes)? Also, when his mother approaches him to ask about where the footballs are, what aisles? They are in aisles 8 & 15, also the first two numbers of the mysterious and powerful sequence.

A couple conspiracy thoughts: Boone in the plane talking on the radio - voice sounds like his own and says back to him, "But WE are the survivors of flight 815 (number sequence again)..." So here's one thought...they are caught in some sort of time loop and Boone is talking to himself sixteen years in the future/past and they are stuck! Also, another crazy thought: psycho Ethan is actually Claire's son!

Discuss.

Julianna

Oh my gosh, Tim, now I am really freaked out with your "time loop" theory! Ethan as Claire's son!!! Oh no...

timsamoff

Ok, first, the golf thing -- straight from Gilligan's Island. That's an easy one. :)

Second, the time-loop -- good theory, but there was a Twilight Zone episode that delved into the same subject matter (not quite as deep as this, I assure you).

Ok, so, J.J. Abrams says that these are actual events... That kind of rules out my theory...maybe. :)

We'll just have to wait and see how this all progresses, I guess.

Tim's thoughts, as my wife puts it, are kind of freaky, though!

Tim Keel

Yeah, Abrams is brilliant with the pop culture tie-ins/references. Back to the Hurley episode, there were three direct references to Indiana Jones movies. Can you name them?

Chris C.

Tim- regarding your time loop theory, have you noticed that the book Sawyer has been reading on the beach both times has been Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle In Time"? Things that make you go "hmmmmm"....

I couldn't make out the words said back to Boone on the radio...I'm going to have to go back and listen more closely. The time loop theory would also explain why they picked up the distress call that they though had been playing for all those years...

brooke

you all are way more observant than me. i did think about the boone and the boy thing, and wondered what the voice was saying back to boone - it all happened so fast i could scarcely take it in. scott just dragged the show out of the trash can so we can watch it again and be observant this time instead of just freaked out. i feel like we need to have a dinner get-together to discuss.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one addicted to this show. Probably the best epic storytelling on television with the exception of HBO's Carnivale(imho).

As I mentioned on my blog, Locke is my favorite character on the show.

Tim Keel

I actually have all 19 episodes still. The first 14 are burned on a DVD as .avi files and 15-19 are still on my hard drive. If I start Jones-ing I might re-watch a few.

Hey James, good to hear from you. I caught a couple of episodes of that. Interesting. My understanding is that it has been killed as a series for HBO though.

timsamoff

Tim, I'm going to have to borrow your DVDs... We missed the first few episodes!
